Turtle Conservation Bentota

sri lanka’s lifeline for endangered sea turtles: protects, rescues, and releases turtles

The Save Haven

Sri Lanka is home to five out of the seven sea turtle species in the world, all of which visit the island’s shores to nest.

Turtles You Can Meet Here
  • Green Turtle – The most commonly found species in Sri Lanka, named for the green color of its body fat

  • Olive Ridley Turtle – The smallest of the sea turtles, famous for its synchronized mass nesting.

  • Hawksbill Turtle – Known for its stunning shell, which sadly makes it a target for illegal trade.

  • Loggerhead Turtle – Rare in Sri Lanka but easily recognized by its large head and strong jaws.

  • Leatherback Turtle – The largest of all sea turtles, growing up to 7 feet long

Ancient Mariners of the Ocean

Sea turtles have been around for more than 100 million years. These incredible creatures have survived ice ages, shifting continents, and mass extinctions.

But today, they face their greatest challenge: us, humans.

Threats to Survival

  • Habitat destruction due to coastal development

  • Plastic pollution and fishing nets

  • Poaching for meat, shells, and eggs

  • Climate change affecting nesting sites

A Turtles Journey

One of the most touching moments at the center is witnessing the release of baby turtles into the ocean. It’s a magical sight—tiny hatchlings scrambling towards the waves, taking their first steps into the vast sea.

Only 1 in 1,000 baby turtles make it to adulthood!

Hatchlings use the moonlight to find their way to the ocean, which is why artificial lights on beaches can disorient them.

Female turtles always return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs—sometimes traveling thousands of miles!

An Effort That Needs You

  • Adopt a Turtle – Many centers offer adoption programs where you can sponsor the care of a turtle.

  • Say No to Plastic – Sea turtles often mistake plastic for jellyfish, leading to fatal consequences.

  • Support Ethical Tourism – Avoid places that allow handling of turtles in stressful conditions.

  • Spread Awareness – Every visitor who learns about turtle conservation becomes an advocate for their survival.
