Kande Viharaya

one of Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist temples

Story Behind The Name

The name translates to "Temple on the Hill", and true to its name, this temple sits majestically atop a hill, overlooking the lush landscapes of Bentota and Aluthgama.

Founded in 1734 by Ven. Karapagala Dewamitta Thero, a disciple of the Kotte-era Buddhist reformer Welivita Sri Saranankara Thero, the temple has been a centre for Buddhist learning and devotion for centuries.

The Majestic Seated Buddha

The most striking feature of Kande Viharaya is its giant seated Buddha statue, which towers at 48 meters (160 feet), making it one of the tallest of its kind in the world.

Interesting Facts

The statue is visible from miles away, making it a significant landmark.

It represents the Dhyana Mudra, a hand gesture symbolizing deep meditation and enlightenment.

At night, when illuminated, it creates a breathtaking sight, attracting devotees and photographers.

Murals & Relics

Step inside the temple, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by centuries-old murals and carvings that depict the Jataka Tales (stories of Buddha’s past lives).

  • Intricately painted walls tell Buddhist teachings through stunning frescoes.

  • The relic chamber holds sacred items, including ancient manuscripts and objects of religious significance.

  • The Bo Tree, believed to be a sapling from the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, is a site for meditation and prayers.
