Bawa’s Brief Garden
a place where nature and creativity intertwine, forming a secret paradise
Tucked away in the lush countryside of Bentota, Brief Garden is a place where nature and creativity intertwine, forming a secret paradise that once served as the retreat of Bevis Bawa, the elder brother of Sri Lanka’s renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa. This enchanting estate, filled with tropical greenery, artistic sculptures, and whimsical pathways, is a living masterpiece, one that has inspired visitors, artists, and designers from around the world.
A Garden Born From A ‘Brief’ Moment
The name Brief Garden has an unusual origin. It is said that Bevis Bawa acquired the estate in the 1920s as payment for legal services—a “brief” in legal terms—hence the name. What was once an ordinary rubber plantation soon became a botanical wonderland, carefully designed over 40 years to reflect Bawa’s love for art, design, and nature.

A Labyrinth Of Greenery & Art
Walking through Brief Garden feels like stepping into another world. The paths, often narrow and winding, are lined with towering bamboo, lush ferns, and exotic flowers, creating a sense of mystery and discovery. Every corner reveals something unexpected: an ancient stone statue peeking through the foliage, an elegant pond reflecting the sky, or a hidden arch draped in vines.
